A bon vivant is not a partygoer or a hedonist. It is someone who enjoys generous conversation, knows how to choose a good drink, listens to music with devotion, and dances to it without apology.

Don Belisario del Castillo was — and still is — one of these. He knew that time does not accumulate. So he made a habit of losing it on purpose.

The Don used to say that a good host doesn't show off the main hall first — he shows you the calmest room in the house first. This is that room: the one that welcomes you without making a fuss.

This is where the Don used to sleep when he was not yet the Don, but a man in his thirties just back from a trip to Marseille. He brought home a green crystal ashtray that still sits on the bedside table. If you use it, please rinse it gently.
